미국주교회의 결혼보호특별위원회의 의장인 루이스빌대교구 조셉 쿠르츠 대주교가 결혼을 지키는 일이 우리시대의 가장 중요한 사회정의 문제의 하나라고 강조하면서, 뉴저시주와 뉴욕주의 각 상원이 동성(同性)결혼을 합법화하려는 법안을 부결한 것을 칭찬하였다.

쿠르츠 대주교는 “최근의 메인주 뉴욕주 뉴저시주의 이런 의결들이 희망과 격려를 준다. 지금 미국민은 혼인문제에서 제일 중대한 시점에 있다. 개인의 기본권을 보호한다고 해서 혼인의 특이한 진실과 가치까지 희생시킬 필요가 있는 것도 아니고 또 그래서는 안 된다는 것을 많은 사람들이 점점 인정하고 있다. 남편과 아내사이의 사랑의 훌륭함, 어머니와 아버지의 제일 중요한 책임, 자녀의 권리, 이 모두가 법의 보호를 받아야 하고, 모든 사람들의 존엄과 공동선에 필수불가결이다.”라고 언명하였다.

 Calling the defense of marriage “one of the premier social justice issues of our time,” Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville, chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee for the Defense of Marriage, praised the state senators of New Jersey and New York for rejecting bills that would have legalized homosexual marriage.
 “The recent decisions in Maine, New York and New Jersey are signs of hope and sources of encouragement,” said Archbishop Kurtz. “We are in a pivotal moment in this country on the issue of marriage, as more and more people recognize that protecting the basic rights of persons need not and should not come at the expense of the unique truth and value of marriage. The good of the love between husband and wife, the vital responsibilities of mothers and fathers, and the rights of children all deserve unique protection under law-- all of these are indispensable to a just society that serves the dignity of all people and the common good.”
 “Preserving marriage between one man and one woman is a matter of justice; indeed it is one of the premier social justice issues of our time,” he added. “It does not deny but rather supports basic human rights-- especially the rights of children.”
