한국에서 우리 가톨릭교회의 문화적, 사회적 실상에『눈을 떠야』하는 이유는 무엇 때문이겠습니까. 그것은 그리스도의 지체인 교회가 우리의 일상생활을 통하여 지켜지고 축복되어야 하기 때문입니다. 『눈을 떠서 알거나』『알게 하는 것』이 우리 힘에 부치다는 것은 잘 알고 있습니다. “생활과 말로 증언하여 그리스도를 알리는 것은 이 세상 보통 환경 속에서 실천하는 가운데서 이루어지므로 구체적 능력과 특별한 힘을 가지게(교회교의헌장)”되는 중대한 것이기 때문입니다. 그러나 “내 이름으로 2명 또는 3명이 모여도 내가 그들 가운데 있다.(마태오 18장 20절)”고 하신 그리스도의 은총을 역시 믿고 의지하려고 합니다. 그래서 우리는 기도로 시작하고 그런 다음 토론을 시작하려 합니다. 교우 개인 또는 우리 사회를 위기로 몰아가게 할 수도 있는 비뚤어진 의견과 잘못된 생각을 교회 안의 많은 교우들에게 나누어 주려는 것을 보고 놀라지 않을 수 없습니다. 보잘 것 없으나마 전문지식과 이치에 어긋나지 않는 판단을 교우들에게 전해 드리는 게 도리라고 생각하지 않을 수 없게 되었습니다. 아주 나약한 존재인 인간들로서 많은 착오를 일으킬 것입니다. 그러므로 반대의견이나 진지한 토론을 환영합니다. 이것이 좀 더 하느님께 가까워지는 길이라고 생각합니다.

Why should we be "aware" of the current cultural, social situations of our Catholic Church in Korea? Because the Church, Body of Christ, should be kept safeguarded and alive in blessing through our everyday lives. We admit "being aware of" or "making aware of" is too much for us, for "announcing of Christ by a living testimony as well as by the spoken word takes on a specific quality and a special force in that it is carried out in the ordinary surrounding of the world (Dogmatic Constitution on the Church)." But we also believe in and are dependent on His mercy that "where two or three are gathered in My name there am I in the midst of them (Mathew 18:20)." So we begin praying and then we begin our discussion. It is surprising for us to find out that many members of the Church have been handed out perverse suggestions and wrong ideas, which could lead us into individual or social crisis. We are humbly obliged to voice our professional knowledge and no-nonsense understanding in order to be heard among our beloved members of the Church. As we may make mistakes, being very feeble humans, we welcome adversary contentions and sincere discussions. We understand that's the way we can become nearer to our God.
